Brownsville residents say the city is moving in the right direction, according to a recent resident survey conducted by the City of Brownsville. The survey, conducted in partnership with OnPointe Insights, gathered feedback from nearly 1,000 residents on the city’s progress, quality of life, and areas where the community wants to see continued investment. According to the results, 61 percent of respondents said Brownsville is headed in the right direction. The survey also found that 54 percent of residents believe the city has made substantial progress over the last three years.
Residents pointed to several areas where they have seen improvement, including economic growth and job opportunities, parks and trails, public safety, and city-led events and festivals. Officials say the survey provides an important snapshot of how residents view Brownsville’s growth and the services being provided across the community. The survey also identified areas where residents want city leaders to continue focusing their attention. Those priorities include roadway improvements, drainage, housing affordability, nature and wildlife preservation, and responsible growth management. In open-ended comments, roads and maintenance were listed as the top concern among residents.
Economic development and jobs followed, along with traffic and planning, and public safety and policing. Residents also shared what they value most about living in Brownsville. Many cited the city’s friendly community, culture and heritage, improving economy, and its location near the beach and Mexico. Another key finding from the survey was Brownsville’s “refer a friend” score, which came in at plus 20. According to OnPointe Insights, that is considered a positive rating and reflects how likely residents are to recommend Brownsville as a place to live. City leaders say the feedback will help guide ongoing planning efforts and future community improvements.
The city is currently working on several master planning initiatives, including the Downtown Renaissance Master Plan, parks planning, health and wellness, housing, the Gladys Porter Zoo, and the forthcoming Space Commerce Master Plan. These plans are expected to align with the city’s Comprehensive Plan, which will help guide Brownsville’s long-term growth and development. Officials say the survey results show that residents recognize the city’s momentum but also want to see visible progress on everyday needs such as streets, drainage, public spaces, safety, and communication from City Hall.
The overall takeaway is that residents want Brownsville to continue growing while also protecting the qualities that make the city unique. Residents are encouraged to stay informed about city projects, programs, services, and announcements by visiting BrownsvilleTX.gov or following the City of Brownsville on social media.
