More than 4 million people have stopped receiving benefits through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program amid federal changes to the program, according to NPR reporting.
The decline has continued since July 2025 as SNAP faces changes involving eligibility and funding. The effects may differ by state and household, depending on income, family size and other program requirements.
The changes are prompting debate among officials, advocates and food banks about access to groceries and pressure on household budgets. People who receive or recently lost SNAP benefits should check current eligibility rules and renewal requirements with their state benefits agency.
