OLMITO, Texas – Cameron County will open the second phase of Olmito Nature Park with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 9 a.m. Friday, Aug. 7, at 9538 Hayes Road.
The 39-acre park’s newest amenities include a kayak launch, two fishing piers, a concession area, restrooms and office space for the county parks department. The project also added permeable parking, solar lighting, native landscaping and interpretive signs.
The county stocked the park’s water with 5,000 largemouth bass in April 2026. The additions are intended to support fishing, paddling, wildlife observation and other low-impact outdoor recreation.
Frank Michael and Jane McKinney donated the land. Phase II was supported by $4.3 million from American Rescue Plan Act funds and certificates of obligation. Gomez Mendez Saenz served as architect and Holchemont was the contractor.
Cameron County Judge Eddie Trevino Jr. and Precinct 1 Commissioner Joey Lopez said the project expands public access to nature and creates another recreational destination for residents and visitors.
