Brownsville first responders conduct active shooter training to strengthen emergency response

Brownsville Fire Department paramedics recently partnered with the Brownsville Police Department to participate in advanced active shooter response training designed to improve coordination and lifesaving efforts during high-risk incidents.

The training, based on the Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training (ALERRT) program, took place in a simulated school environment and focused on real-world emergency scenarios. Fire Department medic units were rotated into teams to form Rescue Task Forces (RTFs), allowing them to enter potentially dangerous scenes under law enforcement protection and provide immediate medical care to victims.

This type of training prepares first responders to operate in austere and rapidly evolving environments, where seconds can make the difference between life and death. By integrating police and fire personnel into coordinated response teams, the exercise emphasized rapid intervention, communication, and victim stabilization during critical incidents.

City officials highlighted the importance of ongoing preparedness efforts, especially as active shooter incidents continue to be a growing concern nationwide. According to a recent Federal Bureau of Investigation report, Texas recorded more active shooter incidents than any other state in 2024.

The City of Brownsville expressed appreciation to the Brownsville Police Department and Jubilee Brownsville for their collaboration and for hosting the training, underscoring the community-wide commitment to public safety.

Officials say continued joint training exercises like this are essential to ensuring first responders remain ready to protect lives and respond effectively in emergency situations.
