Federal and state health officials are investigating a multistate salmonella outbreak linked to recalled shell eggs.
Consumers and businesses should check egg packaging against current recall information and throw away or return affected products. Refrigerators, containers and surfaces that touched recalled eggs should be cleaned and sanitized. Salmonella can cause diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps, with young children, older adults and people with weakened immune systems at greater risk of severe illness.
Anyone with serious symptoms should contact a health care provider. The Food and Drug Administration and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention continue to update the investigation.
